Canadian Snowbirds CT-114 Tutor Crash Lands After Takeoff Tuesday

A Canadian Forces Snowbirds CT-114 crash landed shortly after takeoff on Tuesday from the North Peace Regional Airport in Fort St. John, Northern B.C.

According to reports, the aircraft had trouble on takeoff, and the pilot was able to turn back to the airport. However, the CT-114 ran off the end of the runway, damaging the aircraft and starting a small fire. The pilot did not sustain any physical injuries, and was taken to the hospital in stable condition as a precaution.

The Royal Canadian Air Force released the following statement:

“The RCAF is aware of an incident at the Fort St John, BC Airport today involving a CT-114 Tutor aircraft of 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron on takeoff.

The aircraft was able to land on the airfield, but suffered some damage to the aircraft in the process. The sole occupant (pilot) did not sustain physical injuries and is being assessed by medical personnel.

This incident is the subject of an RCAF flight safety investigation. It is too early to say what impact this incident may have on future performances by the Snowbirds.”

The Snowbirds were scheduled to perform at the Penticon Peach Festival on Wednesday, but that appearance has been cancelled following the incident.

An investigation is currently underway, and it is unknown for how long the Snowbirds will be grounded.
